Goodbye, 2020! Hello New Year and New Me, right? I know we all wish that is how it really works but not much changed when the clock struck midnight.... most of us woke up to much of the same. And yet, somehow the new year does begin to stir emotions and spark energy for many. So if you are feeling that urge, don't let it slip away. Grab a pen and paper and start today. I will help!
As I began to craft my 2021 goals and ambitions in December, I decided to add a heaping dose of nursing attributes to my goal list. No better way to celebrate a trusted profession and what a great way to highlight the superheroes to many in 2020.
I still remember getting to wear that RN badge as a new nurse. It was exhilarating. What an honor to finally put the hard work to the test and to fully embody the calling and oath I had taken to heart.
But you're...
I'm Amy. Nurse, wife, mom, sister, friend... I am no different than you. I face the same struggles, live the same realities, and get knocked over from life's tough blows. However, I have found peace in the panic and a cushion in the chaos using my nursing mindset in my everyday life. I started this blog as a way to interweave my calling as a nurse with my faith and to inspire others to trust in the goodness of God.
As I began my 21-day challenge to regroup and refocus on January 2, I felt like my word for this year would be "good / God's goodness." Everywhere I turned as I spent the last few weeks pouring into new year prep, the same theme kept returning... God's goodness.
I understand that many of you feel a bit hopeless in the new year. I promise to do my part to show you the goodness of God even in the tough moments, how to develop a deeper relationship with Him, and how to build nurse-like trust in any setting of your life.
Thanks so much for joining me here! This is the first year I have opened the private places and some of the personal notes, but if God says share... I must.
I trust Him to turn my "human" into good.
If you have followed my journey here, you know that in 2019 we had quite a cancer scare with my husband. While I am happy to report he is alive and pretty well, our family learned what true goodness really embodies. 2019 was a heavy year and it hurt. It strengthened friendships and it distanced others. But still... there was good.
And then 2020 brought with it - Covid. But still... there was good.
2021 brings with it uncertainty. But still... there is good.
Good isn't easy. In fact, good often comes disguised as heavy. But once those layers peel back, the heart is left raw and open. There in the midst of the heartache, God's goodness seeps in barrier-free and fills the hurt. As the healing takes place, scar tissue and all, you find His goodness tucked safely inside of you.
Since this is a live, in-progress journey for me this new year, check back daily for updates. I will share my notes, ideas, templates, and prayers with each of you.
Good does exist. His goodness can be on overflow. I am glad you are here with me.
Here's your 21-day jumpstart to finding the Goodness of God in 2021, Nurse style.
*Day 1 is packed with resource information - gives you options on what you will need to start the challenge. Simple information but don't be overwhelmed, the remaining days will be short and just the resources you need for success!
Day 1: Attention to detail.
What distinguishes the good from the great is definitely attention to detail. We can all relate to that one nurse who was different. Her charisma enveloped the room and she or he had your complete attention. She cared about the details and cared about your wellbeing.
Like nursing, attention to detail is essential to success in 2021. If you have not already done so, take the time to begin to analyze your 2019. Write down the highs and lows, the things that worked, and the things you need to bury. A successful jumpstart takes a bit of detail and planning in the beginning.
Here are my day one goals:
Let me show you how:
Read the entire Bible in one year.
I have committed to reading the entire Bible each year for many, many years. It is a daily habit I watched my Dad model my entire life and it is one that I value. When crazy hits, my time with Him gives me a vacation from life's crazy.
Here are a few of my top 5 resources to use as a template. Modern-day technology really makes just about any kind of Bible in one year reading schedule possible.
I found this website this year as I was searching for my next reading plan. While I did not go with this one, I think it is great for a first time Bible reader or even someone that feels overwhelmed to commit to the entire Bible. They have multiple options from chronological order, New Testament, 71 days in Isaiah, book order, 90-day plans... There is something for everyone here!
Bible in One Year App on iPhone.
I used this App for two years in a row. I utilized the audio version mostly, but you can switch to the read-only anytime. The audio adds commentary before and after certain chapters and really explains the scripture. If the Bible still feels confusing or you are looking a fresh perspective, give this one a try!
Last year, I printed a 6-month template from this website. I wanted to return to my actual physical Bible reading and turn the pages one by one again. I even challenged myself to do the Bible in 6-month plan. However, I do think I read a bit too quickly and did miss the commentary from my former audiobooks or other apps in the years prior.
*This is my current 2021 selection. I like how it breaks up the chapters, the audio is easy to listen to, and I enjoy the commentary. They even have some community prayers you can listen to as well. I use the App on my phone but the website link is above.
*I did start my one year plan on January 2, so I had to catch up a day - which is why my Day 1 graphic included two days of scripture reading.
I personally know this publisher and she has a heart of gold. Please check out her magazine and find her on social media. This is a great place for your teens and young adults to use their BEVIV App on their phones and plug into God's word daily in a modern setting. Abbie has a way of grabbing the hearts of young people and pouring God's goodness in heaps.
You won't be disappointed on this one!
Gratitude Journal
This one is as easy as it sounds. Each day you write down 3 things you are thankful for - it is only $6.99 on Amazon and you will get a 52-week guide. You can start anytime - you fill in the dates. Use a notebook or plain piece of paper until yours comes in the mail.
Dietary Changes, Addictions.
I have done several different variations each year. This one is completely personal and must be catered to match you. This year, the two areas I felt the need to eliminate were extra liquids and sugar.
For 21 days, I have committed to only water and coffee to drink. I have done water only before but I kept the coffee this year. ;) I will miss my Diet Dr. Pepper the most... which is a sign I needed to get rid of that addiction. There are many people that do "Dry January" - no alcohol, there are some who do the Daniel fast which includes more dietary changes along with drinks... Be realistic, keep it simple yet intentional. It really does clear your mind!
21 Names to Pray for Every Day in 2021
*This one is my favorite. I really felt the urging to pray for some specific individuals this year. My success is directly related to a praying family. The power of prayer within my immediate family is truly one of a kind. Seeing is believing, but trust me once you feel the prayers... it changes everything!
So use this year to be someone else's much-needed prayer warrior. Hurt lives in many homes. Hopeless lives in many homes. Prayers are free and God's goodness heals.
On day one of my 21-day challenge, I asked my parents, sister, and Grandma to pray for a specific name on my prayer list. It was the first name on my list and one that was weighing heavy on my mind. By nightfall, God had already begun His Good work and I saw personally how God can soften the heart and forgiveness can begin.
Prayer can work that fast. Really.
Click below for a PDF - feel free to print. You can add your 21 names for 2021.
Devote at least 21+ minutes to a sermon, podcast, or continuing education.
There are so many options on this one. I will include the one I did for day one. This is easy to do while out walking or while riding to work. Keep it simple. I prefer to watch or listen while sitting so I can journal a bit for future reference. However, there are many days that flexibility is key, so get it in whenever you can.
Added Extra: 21+ minutes of Worship Music a day.
Great for the ride to or from work or while getting ready in the morining.

Day 2: Let generosity do the talking.
Tithe.
Nurses are trusted because they give unconditionally. Care is in their blood. You matter and their actions do the talking. They give equally to all.
As a Christian, I understand my job to give just as unconditionally. What is mine, is really His, and it is only mine to manage. Find a local church, find a global community (especially one you have utilized during the pandemic), find a local charity, and give back to God His goodness.
Find a frontline worker, first responder, or other essential workers and give what you can. Words are free. A Simple thank you goes a long way. Pay it forward in line today. Just Give.
So, since day 2 of the 21-day challenge falls on a Sunday for me, tithe is my added to-do item for today.
I hope you picked your Bible plan from day 1, wrote down your 21 names to pray for daily, and eliminated something dietary to help clear your mind.
Here is my 21 minutes+ of learning for Day 2.
Added Bonus: Todays 21+minutes of worship: Don't skip this step!

Day 3: Create a Healing Environment.
Worship becomes essential.
Nurses understand the importance of creating environments conducive to healing. They are careful to balance external demands that can place more stress on an already sick body.
Worship to God is your much-needed healing environment from real life. I placed 21 minutes of worship music as an added extra on Day 1 and 2. However, on Day 3 as you begin to decrease extra external demands and really focus more on Him, worship becomes essential. You start to long for it.
It is a time when His words penetrate those deep hurting places and healing begins. Goodness becomes the overflow.
Here are two great choices for today's 21 must-have minutes of Worship Music:

Day 4: Never Stop Learning.
More.
(today I let my Bible reading day and challenge day catch up to one another - was confusing the other way!)
Modern-day medicine is changing daily. All of us can agree, that we want our nurses, doctors, and other healthcare personnel to commit to lifelong learning. We want to know our best interests are first and for most and that all knowledge and options have been utilized.
And yet, in our personal life, somehow we think very little has to be fed into our mind daily. We read snippets and suddenly find ourselves the expert. Just like continuing education hours are required in many professions to maintain safety and exceptional care, each of us must see the requirements needed to maintain heart health.
21+ minutes of learning quickly becomes a habit as you begin to hunger for more. More attention to detail, more generosity, more healing environments of worship, and more of His words made simple.
Today, I urge you to stretch your goals just a little more.
25 minutes of learning, 45 minutes of worship, add a podcast... The sky is the limit when more of Him is your heart cry.
Today, I enjoyed this conversation. You will easily surpass your 21 minutes of learning goal. All my science friends will enjoy Dr. Caroline Leaf. What an incredible lesson on the mind with a heaping dose of faith applied. Now that is my heart in a nutshell

Day 5: Problem Solving.
Remember.
Nurses are great at what they do thanks to their problem-solving abilities. They remember what they have been taught and are ready to apply critical thinking at a moment's notice. Knowledge is then multiplied through the years as they continue to collect real-life problem-solving scenarios that then surface in the next emergency.
Take the time to remember today. Write down at least 3 things that God has brought you through in 2019 and what you learned. Keep them close to your daily journal or Bible so you can reference them quickly in life's next hardship.
You will eventually face another struggle and you will need yesterday's gratitude and wisdom to trust Him today.
Here are your 21+ minutes of learning and worship for day 5.

Day 6: Miracle Workers.
Believing in the impossible.
If you've ever had a medical emergency, you've shown up to a hospital in a hopeless state. You are in panic and your body is beyond your control. You arrive at a destination where you hope miracles exist. You soon feel the soft touch, kind words, and see the energy focused on your well-being within seconds. Angels disguised as nurses quickly make you feel like nothing is impossible.
Our relationship with Christ is much the same. Today, I am focusing on that one thing that feels impossible. That one heavy area that I am carrying and it really hurts. I know in healing it will be a story that will inspire; however, until that miracle fully takes place, I keep it tucked tight in His care.
It's like the song below - "No longer slaves"- bondage feels heavy. I wonder if there is one thing that you feel is impossible? I vowed to pray in earnest over my 21-day challenge regarding my impossible. So today, I dedicate several very specific prayer times to focusing on bringing my impossible through the doors of Heavens ER, straight to the throne. I am certain it will be greeted with many nurse-like angels ready to administer a heaping dose of God's goodness.
Write down that one impossible thing today, place it on your prayer list, in your journal, and be faithful to do your part. You can then watch Him do a NEW thing in your life.
Isaiah 43:18-19
“Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert."
Luke 1:37
"For with God nothing shall be impossible."
Here are your 21+ minutes of learning and worship music.

Day 7: Knowing your limits.
Rest and Reflect.
Any great healthcare worker knows the importance of time away. Many fields in medicine are demanding physically, emotionally, and mentally. It is impossible to be fully present in code blue moments without proper rest and reflect in your downtime.
As Christians, we must remember to take time to rest and reflect as well. It is impossible for us to be fully present in our relationship with Christ when we are running on fumes. Today, as I reach the first full week of my 21-day challenge, I am replacing my 21 minutes of learning and music with rest and reflection. I really want to spend very dedicated minutes to reflect on this week's hard work and dedication and then rest to refuel for the days ahead!
Make a goal in 2021 to ensure rest and reflection stay on your weekly goal list. Takeaways from your daily time with God and your time devoted to extra learning opportunities this week could be the missing link to your success in the New Year. Summarize your highs, summarize the lows, then rest, and get ready for week 2!

Day 8: Communication Skills.
Plan a date to practice.
It is no secret why nurses remain the most trusted profession year after year - they have exceptional communication skills. They devote their day to YOU! They listen closely to your concerns and problems and then relay them accurately to the appropriate team. They are careful not to interrupt, they know exactly the next question to ask, and more importantly, they know exactly when to be silent and just listen.
We all have that friend you dread having lunch with... the one where the entire conversation is about them. After being a nurse, I take careful care of my words and try my best to remember to listen and not make things just about me. In the moments where it is my turn to vent, I try to remember to remain self-aware so I can turn the conversation back to my spouse or friend at the first sign of my rambling. This takes practice...
So many just need to be heard. Pray before you meet a dear friend for lunch or head out on a date with your spouse (like I did today): "Lord, help me not to just be "me" centered. Help me to remember to say how can I better help, you? I can really see that this upsets you."
Two short podcasts on sharpening your communication skills. Must listen!
Day 9: Dependable.
God will provide.
Nurses are dependable. Patients often find great trust in their nurses because they know that like clockwork, they will return to care for them throughout the day. Patients are certain they will provide them with compassion, empathy, and implement the medical treatment plan needed throughout the day despite many other job demands.
As you look towards your New Year Goals, let dependability be a top priority. People need you to be reliable and show up in your home and work life. However, remember to be dependable to God in your relationship with Him. He always provides for you. No lunch breaks, no time away to rest.
It is easy to get negatively minded in your already way too busy life. You start feeling your budget stretched to the max and you miss seeing His many provisions. Take the time today to stop and revisit His goodness.
Life is definitely not an easy path, but all things work together for good as you step into His purpose. The first step requires being dependable in the small things and faithful to always give back.
Today is Sunday for me, so I practiced dependability by attending church (online) and giving (tithe) back to Him all that He has provided for me this week.

Day 10: Life's Greatest Cheerleaders.
Celebrate small steps towards success and the NEW taking place in your life!
Nurses are often some of life's greatest cheerleaders. They often cross your path at moments of pain and hurt. They have mastered the art of picking up your pieces, helping you reassemble the mess, and cheer you on each and every tiny step of the way.
Pray for God to send you friends who do much of the same. Friends who see your inward hurt and pain and care that you succeed and heal. Friends who enable you are no friends at all. Pick the friends who notice those silent tears and who join you in the tedious work of pulling yourself out of the muck and mire. You need friends who keep you from returning to places, things, and people that God told you to leave alone!
Here at the halfway mark of my 21-day journey, I want to take the time to celebrate the NEW work that has begun inside of me. New habits, new goals, new friendships, new paths... I've experienced so many answers to prayers in the first 11 days of this year, I have felt peace in uncertainties, I have been amazed at His daily provisions, and have renewed vigor for the remaining days.
Today is also my husband's birthday, so we will have a party to celebrate him. We have walked step by step with him over the last two years battling cancer and we keep our eyes set on the NEW work God will continue to do in his life this year.
My 21+ minutes of learning today:

Day 11: Know your scope.
Make your To Don't Do list!
Nurses know their scope. Ignorance and distractions cause confusion and chaos. Years of training, practice, and continuing education hours help medical personal glide seamlessly in pace with one another in the blink of an eye, each knowing their role and gaining forward momentum through teamwork. Knowing your role, practicing until it's a habit, helps guide you to peace in the panic and a cushion in the chaos. You walk into your shift knowing the how, what, when, where, and why.
We can't all be the doctor, the nurse, the respiratory therapist... but we are called to be the best version of what we've studied and trained to be each and every day. Knowing what we can not do (what is outside of our scope) helps form guidelines, boundaries, and partnerships within a team.
Today, make your To Don't Do list. Eliminate the things that are outside of your scope and the distractions that keep you from doing the items necessary to achieve your goals. Dream big and be intentional with the things you can control and do more of what matters most!
__________________________________________________________________________________
Day 12: Mentor, Empower and Equip.
Pray for more workers.
"Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few."
Matthew 9:37
In nursing and in everyday life, we need more people to answer the call. More individuals who are working for their why. Pray daily that God will use you to mentor, empower, and equip future generations to be world changers. Jobs that rarely include ideal situations, provide little to no sense of normalcy and are not immune to pain.
Nurses and other healthcare workers provide care: the most valuable and trusted commodity in today's hard times. Life is not easy. However, my deepest desire for future generations to realize you've already carried heavy loads. You've shown up to the front-lines on painful, ugly days and you've still shown love and grace. That IS calling and the front-lines need more just like YOU!
21 Minutes of learning:

Day 13: Daily discipline builds endurance.
Being a nurse requires precise habits, daily disciplines, and physical and emotional strength. The ability to not crumble under mounting pressure is a skill that nurses execute eloquently. They've trained until skills have become a habit and they keep their mindset focused on the next step, triaging each new factor.
Building endurance for the future requires a daily mindset to adopt new habits and ways of living. It is easy to become focused on the end goal and forget the small daily disciplines needed to build your better tomorrow. As James Clear talks about in his book, Atomic Habits, start with adopting the 2-minute rule: scale your goal down at first to 2 minutes. Instead of focusing on the end result, which can seem insurmountable, meet those small progress goals daily and then motivation will greet you as you push just a bit further each day!
Today, take a look back at the last 13 days of the 21-day challenge. You've created new habits, kept them attainable each day, and then you have continued to build upon them. Your daily discipline and increasing endurance are building a solid foundation for a successful New Year!

Day 14: Know when to ask for help.
Team Building is essential.
In the medical field, there are numerous teams dedicated to each patient. Each team member knows their scope and they know when they should call for help! When a patient's condition is worsening, it is imperative that the nurse recognize when she or he has exhausted their capabilities and send out the call for back up. When we each do our job to the best of our abilities and work together, we form an unshakable team.
As you continue on this 21-day journey, you may be finding areas that are a bit beyond your capabilities. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Things like depression, addiction, or other areas in your work or home may very well need you to call in a higher power. Or, you may be finding that in order to achieve the next step in your goal, you need advice in areas that are new to you as you grow. Consulting and outsourcing become essential.
Take a look at your goals and decide which areas you need to build a better team. I did just that today. I had several goals that needed detailed work that was over my capabilities, so I scheduled a phone conference and received great advice. Now, I can continue to focus on doing several small things excellent and build a dedicated team to help with the rest!

Day 15: Testing is Good for you.
Not too many people like to be tested. However, testing is essential to learning. It is never fun, to begin with, but it soon becomes the norm as you begin to climb to each new level in your schooling or profession. We can all appreciate continued testing and certifications that healthcare workers are required to maintain to ensure your best interest are always at heart when in their care.
Difficult seasons in life are testing times for all of us. COVID 19 is a prime example of a testing experience or a wilderness experience like Jesus had recorded in Hebrews. Here, we see an example of the lessons learned once you've come through the testing.
John Maxwell does an excellent job of turning Jesus' wilderness experience into a learning opportunity that you can apply to each season in life where you feel tested. In the video below, he reminds us that testing will give you a new level of living, you will become more confident in your purpose, and it will refine and define you.
New seasons and more testing will forever be in our future, stay focused on Him and embrace the powerful lessons as you step into your real purpose.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Day 16: Gently Restore.
Don't take advantage of the vulnerable.
Why most people trust their nurse and continue to rank them among the most trusted profession year after year, is thanks to how nurses gently help restore the sick. They advocate for each patient, take gentle care to provide confidentiality, and provide nonjudgmental care for all.
Today, focus on carrying other's burdens without judgment. Use the same grace that you would like shown to you. We are all imperfect and rely on forgiveness and gentle restoration as we find our way back to Him.
Today is Sunday for me, so I enjoyed listening to this sermon which spoke on the things above. I hope you will continue to give back to God his due (tithe) and watch him multiply your blessings this year. We are better together and I am thankful for your accountability through this journey!

Day 17: Help others prosper.
Don't follow false "good news." There are no easy fixes.
If you have ever had a life-threatening illness such as a heart attack, you soon find yourself examining your lifestyle choices. You quickly learn how fragile life is and that the road to recovery is not so easy. All those fad diets that promise results in a week are pretty hard to stick to in real life. At some point, you see that in order to prosper physically you will need to heed the advice of your medical team. Exercise, a heart-healthy diet, and complete lifestyle changes are the only way.
Our Christian walk is much the same. There are many people promoting false good news - a quick fix to prosperity. A life devoted to Christ is no walk in the park. There will be hard days, persecution, conflict, and unfair circumstances. And yet, we trust that we serve a good God who works all things for His purpose.
Learning resource today, soooooo good!
__________________________________________________________________________________
Day 18: Small Acts of Obedience.
Let go of what you are clinging to...
Today, I felt a strong urge to focus on God's promises and to dream big. Through this 21-day jumpstart, I have been faithful to put the time into reading His word, really trying to understand His promises and to listen to those tiny small nudges. Today, all the pieces started coming together for me.
Could it really be as simple as small acts of obedience that lead to some of life's greatest moments and miracles? Was I just overwhelming myself most days with the magnitude of an outcome I could never really fully control?
Craig Groeschel does an amazing job bringing this idea home in the teaching below. As the tears were flowing, I realized it was time to let go of my strategy and plan so I can cling fully to Him.
As a nurse, it's easy to walk into a shift and do small acts of obedience or prompts throughout your day. Nurses love to care for patients and small measures can lead to huge progress in a patient's condition. Simple things like touch, creating a comforting environment, compassion... So if God created our physical bodies to respond to even the slightest ounce of love and compassion, then imagine what is possible when we do the same in our walk with Him.
Today, I wrote down something I was clinging to and trying to map out my own plan and strategy. Something that feels BIG. On a separate sheet of paper, I wrote down one of God's promises:
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Then, I physically tore up the paper with what I was clinging to and replaced it with His promises.
I will let go of my strategy. I will let Him completely take the reins and I will obey as He prompts.
I will let go of my strategy and I will obey as He prompts.
I will let go of my strategy and I will obey as He prompts.
On repeat.

Day 19: God Bless America.
Today is Inauguration Day 2021... Most have been glued to the TV... I have done several learning podcast but I think I will leave today's post quiet. Pray for our new officials and for America. Land of the free because of the brave.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Day 20: Be authentic.
Stop people-pleasing.
I love to be in the presence of a good friend just being real. Really crazy usually... but none the less, real. Nurses are loved and trusted because of their genuine self that they bring to the bedside. They meet you in your worst and give you exactly what you need. They don't just try to make you happy, but to genuinely care about what makes you better. How much better would we all be if we gave each other the real life-changing truth?
As I look towards 2021 with the word "good" and "God's goodness" as my focus, it is easy for me to get bogged down with saying: "But God, I am not good enough." I have good intentions, a good heart most of the time, but my weaknesses try to scream out at me and keep me silent. I have learned humility over the last 20 days and tried to dig deep to find my real, authentic voice. The voice He put inside me to be used for His good. All I need is to say is: Here I am, you can have it all - the good, the bad, and the ugly ready to be used for His good, His purpose.
Proverbs 3:10:
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Day 21: Vision Matters.
Pray to be a calm, confident leader in all your roles. Don't ignore present reality but remember to balance and adjust your strategy in life's uncertainties.
In any role (leader, parent, spouse, employee) pray for a calm, confident demeanor. We value our healthcare providers and professionals because they take many uncertain factors, our high anxieties, and calmly and quickly sort out a plan of care. This application of details to specific strategies is exactly the balance I hope to pursue in my personal life and work life.
I hope to take the things I have learned over the 21 days and apply them throughout the year. I will make a recap post that combines each thought and day's focus into a concise go to this year. I appreciate the many who have joined me in some shape or form on this journey.
Here's to using life's distractions as opportunities, to execute things that align with your vision, to develop a support team, and to keep asking good questions. You do not need to have all the answers but you will forever need to "triage" so you know what to do or ask next.
If you have watched nothing on my 21-day journey resource guide, this is the ONE. Michael Hyatt is an incredible resource, his books are amazing, and he will help you craft vision and find a better tomorrow but excelling today!
Here's to success together!
P.S. Don't miss out. Join me here!
Welcome to Absolutely Amyable. Here you will find your calm cushion in life's chaos.
I have renewed resolve to use my story to help shape your story. To pass on to the next generation the power of meaningful connection and care for others.
May each of us who swore by oaths in our professions recite them daily and vow to uphold them. May each of us help guide others to find and fulfill their inner calling.
But You're ___________ *insert your name here
Welcome to the front lines!
