Thank you, frontline workers. The real heroes this year.
Take time this holiday to remember the ones who show up on days when others remain safe behind their four walls. The ones who do not wait for all the research and analysis. The ones who show up even if they risk exposure to harm in some way.
I started this blog in September as a way to encourage others to think about their job on the frontlines of life on a daily basis, to help raise a generation of passion-driven future frontline workers, and to shine a light on professions that go over and beyond the call of duty every single day.
Take time today to hush any fuss about the state of the union, healthcare, and COVID questions and genuinely pray for the safety of all the ones who are the real heroes this year.
Lord, bless them extra this Christmas and in all the days and years to come.
It takes a special breed of people to carry the loads and still continue to give with a genuine spirit. This blog post is dedicated just to you. May you find peace knowing you did your part to provide care. You showed up on heavy, hard days and still showed love and grace. That is calling and the frontlines need more just like you!
I still remember crying on the holidays as a new nurse, headed off to work a holiday shift. I was sad to leave my new husband and then shortly after my little girls. I feel selfish for those tears after this year, when every day was a struggle for so many. Frontline workers have left their families and have taken unknown risks.
Here are 4 simple ways to show your appreciation to a frontline worker this holiday.
1.When you don't have the words...
Just simply say thank you.
Thank you I slept safe last night. Thank you for nursing me back to health. Thank you for providing care to my dying family member when the outcome was out of your hands. Thank you for functioning for family in a year where isolation kept many from the beside. Thank you for the many hands held, the risks taken, and the love given.
We are grateful for each of you and celebrate the gift you gave this tough year.
Christmas... a celebration of life. Thank you for gifting many with restored health and for showing up on days when earthly life began to fade. Thanks for the tears shed in private and the extra push you mustered to face each and every day. Although thanks does not feel like quite enough...
Thank you.
2. Be thankful for their why and pray to know your why.
Why do nurses, doctors, and other frontline workers run into jobs that rarely include ideal situations, provide little to no sense of normalcy, and are not immune to pain?
Calling.
"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Mark Twain
Frontline workers carry heavy loads for others. They ensure every patient feels loved, valued, and heard. Life is not easy. However, once you ignite that passion, you soon find your purpose, and your inner calling begins to take shape.
Today, our kids have limitless options but no clear answers. Our future generations need to know that what they do matters and they can make a difference. Let them see from the countless examples this year that calling matters. Help them see that they have already shown up to the frontlines of life on painful, ugly days, and still shown love and grace.
That is calling and the frontlines need more just like YOU!
But you're__________ ("insert name here) and it's your calling.
Thank you, frontline workers, to all who listened to that little inner urge, answered the call and thrived for all of us this year. We stop to say thanks this holiday season and pray for you in the coming days.
3. Better health. Bigger calling.
While there are many things we can not control, take this time to prepare. Make a vow to make 2021 a healthier year. Small changes equal huge gains when life's blows knock the air out of you and ease the load on frontline workers.
To plan for life's code blue moments, you must take the time to educate. Ownership requires homework and hard work. Being fully invested changes attitudes and facilitates growth and positive progress. Get your hands dirty and put in the hours in the coming year. Set aside time in the remaining December days to plan. Better health. Bigger calling.
We aren't all called to be the doctor, the nurse, the respiratory therapist... but we are called to be the best version of what we've studied and trained to be each and every day. Hard work pays off. Make 2021 count!
4. Make 2021 the year that makes your heart beat again.
"What if I told that all along, that soft, vulnerable, delicate, partially crumbling center that makes up the core of you, that's what people are really trying to get to anyway."
Mary Marantz
Maybe you considered a different career path? Maybe you want to volunteer and give back? Find ways to make 2021 matter and thank our current frontline workers today.
Life is fragile and normal never really existed. Find what makes your heart beat again and help raise our future generations to answer some of life's greatest callings.
